Canaries have been kept by men for as long as men have kept written and etched records.  Hieroglyphic records show the feeding an attracting of songbirds to the lodgings where men gathered.  They are melodic sentinels, who detect water for humans,  and their song (trill)  reduces stress and blood pressure by as much as 20 percent.  But that only occurred when the birds had ample light and darkness, and in todays World who had time to gather and fold a blanket over the bird cage each day twice a day?  Also who had time to vacuum the floor around the cage?   Thats why this coveted pet has taken a back seat to cats and dogs in recent times.
